Fixed standard braces are an excellent treatment option for our patients in Birmingham; they can be used to facilitate a wide range of tooth movements and are safe and predictable.
The principal drawback to metal appliances, however, is their conspicuousness. Ceramic braces offer a way to substantially soften this look while still having brackets mounted to the front of your teeth (for brackets mounted to the back of your teeth, see fixed lingual braces).
This is achieved by fitting clear ceramic brackets that blend in with your teeth. The wire that links through the brackets can also be coloured white to keep the overall visual presence of the appliance to a minimum, and clear ligatures are used to attach the wire to the bracket.
We use the Radiance system made by American Orthodontics. This is a premium product that uses small brackets made from single crystals of sapphire, one of the hardest materials available in nature and second only to diamond.
These ceramic braces are also discreet: a recent study in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics found Radiance to be the most translucent of all monocrystalline brackets.
Ceramic brackets are more expensive than traditional stainless steel versions but the benefits they offer in terms of a reduction in the visual presence of the appliance are substantial. It is also possible for patients in Birmingham to opt for treatment with ceramic braces on their top teeth and fixed standard braces on their lower teeth as a balance between reduced visibility and overall treatment expense. This is something we can consider and discuss together at your first visit to our clinic in Birmingham.
We recognise that each patient has unique priorities, and that’s why we tailor our treatment plans to your specific needs. Our patient-centric approach extends to our flexible payment plans, ensuring everyone can access the best care from a specialist orthodontist.
With us, there’s no need to pay upfront; you can pay as you go. Furthermore, our commitment to your well-being doesn’t end with the conclusion of your treatment. We provide 18 months of post-treatment support or even longer if you prefer.
As with fixed standard braces and fixed lingual braces, try to avoid hard foods, chewy foods and fizzy drinks during treatment. Ceramic brackets are made of much harder material than teeth and you will need to take care not to bite on them to avoid the risk of damage to your teeth. Dark, staining foods and drinks can also discolour the elastic ligatures and make the appliance more noticeable. So if you are going to eat a curry, make it the night before you come in to have your ceramic braces tightened so we can change the ligatures.
At One Devonshire Place, we’re committed to offering our patients quality, bespoke, and transformative orthodontic solutions. One such solution that stands out among our Birmingham community is ceramic braces.

Ceramic braces are a type of orthodontic treatment used to correct malocclusions or misalignments of the teeth. They consist of clear or tooth-coloured ceramic brackets that are attached to the teeth, with archwires running through them to shift your teeth into the correct position.
The cost of ceramic braces varies depending on the complexity of the treatment needed. At One Devonshire Place in Birmingham, the cost typically ranges from £2000 to £6000. It's best to consult with your orthodontist for an accurate quote as your personal treatment plan might involve additional costs.
The primary advantage of ceramic braces is their aesthetic appeal - they are less noticeable than metal braces, making them popular among adults. They are also less likely to irritate your gums. However, ceramic braces can be slightly more expensive than metal braces and are more prone to staining if not properly cared for.
Functionally, ceramic braces work in much the same way as metal braces to correct misaligned teeth. The main difference lies in their appearance: ceramic braces are less noticeable due to their clear or tooth-coloured brackets. However, they can be a bit more fragile than metal braces and require diligent care.
The discomfort experienced during orthodontic treatment tends to be more related to the adjustment of the braces rather than the type of braces used. Some patients may feel slight discomfort when ceramic braces are initially fitted or adjusted at One Devonshire Place, but this usually subsides within a few days.
